Game developer Magicave has partnered up with UK newspaper, The Observer.
The company’s Mindset Go puzzle title is going to be appearing every Sunday in the publication. The game was created by Magicave creative director Ste Curran and requires players sort shapes based on similarities.
“Mindset Go is built on a new kind of logic puzzle and it’s part of a new genre too. I’ve always wanted to make games that reach millions, but also leave players feeling good about how they’ve spent their time,” he explained.
“Mindset Go sits somewhere in a Venn diagram: on one side, casual games and time-killers; on the other, games that really make you think. Right in the middle is where we live.”
Magicave CEO Harry Holmwood added: “We’re honoured to be working with The Observer to bring Mindset GO! to a national weekly audience of smart, casual gamers. If you enjoy mentally rewarding games like Wordle, Candy Crush or Sudoku – where progress comes from brainpower, not luck – this is the game for you.”
This is but the latest incident of a mainstream brand bringing games into their offering. In 2022, the New York Times acquired the infamous puzzle title Wordle for a “low seven-figure” sum. The media brand said the following year that this purchase “substantially changed our business”.
Meanwhile, in 2022, mobile specialist AppLovin purchased a different Wordle title from an earlier creator, while dictionary giant Merriam-Webster acquired word game Quordle in 2023.
More recently, games have even made their way to platforms such as LinkedIn, which now boasts titles such as Mini Sudoku on its homepage.
The Observer has been going since 1791 andholds the title for being the oldest Sunday newspaper in the world. Between 1993 and 2024, it was owned by the Guardian Media Group, before being sold to Tortoise Media. That sale came into effect in April 2025.
