Breakout hit Megabonk sells more than a million copies on Steam

Developer Vedinad has announced that the quirkily titled Megabonk has sold more than a million on Steam, proving that there’s still a healthy appetite for rogue-like survival games in the mould of Vampire Survivors.

Vedinad announced the news on X, saying that the milestone was achieved in two weeks.

According to Video Game Insights (VGI), Megabonk has sold an estimated 1.3 million units, and has achieved a peak player count on Steam of over 117,000.

Megabonk uses low-polygon graphics to create what’s essentially a 3D version of Poncle’s huge 2D hit Vampire Survivors, which GamesIndustry.biz‘s Marie Delassandri declared to be her game of the year in 2022. Megabonk iterates on the formula with a particularly odd character roster, including a sunglasses-wearing skeleton on a skateboard.

It’s far from the first game to reap the success of following the Vampire Survivors trend. Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor – which adds mining to the mix – has sold around 1.2 million according to VGI. And Soulstone Survivors, which emerged from Early Access in June, has around 123,000 monthly active users: although creator Allan Smith ended up working 20-hour days in order to be one of the first to leap on the Vampire Survivors bandwagon.

Unsurprisingly, around 62.5% of Megabonk players also own Vampire Survivors, according to VGI. There’s also a strong crossover with Warframe (63.2%) and Risk of Rain 2 (64.1%).

At the time of writing, Megabonk is currently sitting at fifth position in the Steam top seller charts, just behind EA Sports FC 26, and has a “very positive” rating after more than 19,000 reviews.

Megabonk is far from the only game to have suddenly blown up on Steam this year. The drug-dealing simulator Schedule I rocketed to the top of the Steam charts back in March, while Peak sold 2 million copies in just nine days.
